Linux top command sampling duration

Linux top command sampling duration

When "top" shows some process takes up 50% cpu usage, how long sampling
duration is result based on?
I understand "man top" says "The task's share of the elapsed CPU time
since the last screen update", but when top is started and the first time
to show the result, there is no "last screen update", in this case, how
long is the elapsed CPU time? Is that configurable?
